The 100th day of school marks the point when students have attended school for 100 days that school year. Whether students attend online school or in-person school, completing the first 100 days of the school year is often marked with fun activities and projects.
We celebrate the 100th day of school because it is a clever way to reflect on what students have learned and accomplished so far in the year. It also provides a point to look at what’s ahead for the remaining days of the school year. For younger students, the 100th day of school can also be a fun time to teach facts about the number 100.
Since students start the school year on different days, there is no set date for the 100th day of school, but the 100th day of school typically falls somewhere in February or early March.
The first 100 days of school celebration was in 1979. California teacher Lynn Taylor decided to mark the 100th day of school to help her young students better understand the number 100. Her first lesson involved using a puppet of the popular Count von Count character from “Sesame Street” to turn 100 pennies into a dollar.
Two years later, Taylor and her colleagues wrote about the activity in a mathematics newsletter for teachers. The idea caught on quickly, prompting other teachers to develop their own activities to celebrate the 100th day of school. Nearly 50 years later, students, teachers, and Learning Coaches are still celebrating one hundred days of school.
Students of all ages can create a time capsule to mark the 100 days of school. Have your student gather items that represent themselves and their current interests. This can be a toy, book, or even a list of favorite TV shows. All the items are then placed in a box and kept safe with the retrieval date to be next year’s 100th day of school.
Students may want to try creating a digital presentation to display their favorite things they have done or learned over the first 100 days of school—what their favorite subject is, things they like doing with their friends, any projects or class trips they enjoyed, what they want to do when they grow up... Students can share their presentations with their classmates and family in a PowerPoint Party or save them in a folder so they can look back at them whenever they want.
Plan a field trip to mark the 100th day of school. Visit a museum or park or go on a virtual field trip. Or you could plan a special after-school outing such as going out for a fun treat or taking a bike ride.
Mark the 100th day of school by completing 100 reps of an exercise like 100 pushups, sit-ups, or jumping jacks. These exercises are a good way to get moving and can provide an opportunity to take a much-needed break during the school day, whether children are enrolled online or in-person.
Can your student build something using 100 cups? How about 100 paper clips? Have them gather 100 pieces of a given item and then challenge them to use them as a building material. This is a fun activity that not only draws on their creativity but can also provide a valuable STEM activity they can do at home.
Let your student express their creativity with a DIY shirt to mark the 100th day of school. Shirt ideas include everything from sewing on 100 buttons to drawing pictures that represent the things they did during the school year so far.
Having your student take part in these activities to mark the first 100 days of school can help make memories that will last a lifetime. Be sure to check in with Connections Academy for more fun activity ideas and resources to make this school year a memorable one every day!
